Un viaggio lungo la Costa Ovest degli Stati Uniti. 21 giorni d’estate trascorsi disegnando persone e paesaggi. American West è il progetto on the road che Emiliano Ponzi ha pubblicato come editor dell’account Instagram del The New Yorker Art Department, illustrazioni come cartoline spedite da ogni posto in cui ha fatto tappa. Come lo stesso Emiliano l’ha descritto, in un pezzo uscito su Repubblica e su Rep: e poi in un’intervista rilasciata a Vanity Fair, American West è una testimonianza di meraviglia.
Insieme abbiamo selezionato e affidato tre opere all’artigianalità della riproduzione serigrafica. Le stampe, in formato 50 x 50 cm, hanno una tiratura limitata di 53 copie, realizzate su carta Fedrigoni Materica Limestone 360 gr. in 5 colori e sono disponibili in esclusiva sullo shop di Caracol.

 

A journey along the West Coast of the United States. Twenty-one summer days spent portraying people and landscapes. American West is the on the road project that Emiliano Ponzi published as an editor of the Instagram account of The New Yorker Art Department; it consists of illustrations sent like postcards from every place where he made a stop. As Emiliano himself has described it, in an article appeared in la Repubblica and Rep, and in an interview with Vanity Fair, “American West is the outcome of a wonder witnessed”.
Together we have selected three illustrations to be turned into silk screens through skillful craftsmanship. The prints, 50 x 50 cm size, come in a strictly limited edition of 53, made on Fedrigoni Materica Limestone 360 gr. paper, in 5 colours, and can be purchased exclusively on Caracol on line shop.

Le illustrazioni di American West sono da poco state raccolte in un cofanetto edito da Corraini. Un box con 30 tavole da scompaginare e ricombinare o da godere appese come cartoline, accompagnate dal commento di Mario Calabresi e Nicholas Blechman. Anche il box è disponibile da Caracol.

The thirty illustrations of American West have been recently collected in a slipcase by Corraini, with commentaries by Mario Calabresi and Nicholas Blechman. You can take the illustrations out and just admire them or hang them as postcards. The case edition is available on Caracol on line shop.

Un racconto illustrato di luoghi diventati leggenda attraverso la musica e la letteratura: California, Arizona, Utah e Nevada. Le loro distanze rese celebri da Kerouack e Steinbeck. I centri che hanno fatto la storia della cultura americana: Palm Springs e Frank “The Voice” Sinatra, Monterey e il suo festival dove hanno esordito artisti come Janis Joplin e Jimi Hendrix. E in mezzo tutta la molteplicità e i contrasti della Costa Ovest degli Stati Uniti.

 

An illustrated tale of places legendary for the music and literature they produced: California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. Their expanses that Kerouac and Steinbeck made famous. The towns that have made the history of American culture: Palm Springs and its “Voice”, Frank Sinatra, Monterey and its festival where artists such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix made their début. And in between the variety and the contrasts of the American West Coast.

 

 

La strada che si srotola interminabile sotto al sole feroce e stazioni di servizio come sospirate oasi nel deserto. La Monument Valley che riecheggia istintiva delle melodie di Ennio Morricone e terreni che raccontano il West dei nativi confinati nelle riserve. Manciate di case dove la presenza dell’uomo è appena un residuo e poi Las Vegas, folle e gigantesco parco giochi per adulti.

 

The endless road which runs under a fierce sun and gas stations like long-desired oasis in a desert. The Monument Valley which instinctively echoes Ennio Morricone’s melodies and lands that tell the West of the natives confined in reservations. Tiny hamlets almost devoid of human presence and finally Las Vegas, crazy and gigantic playground for adults.

Un Navajo che indossa un paio di shorts Nike sotto l’abito tradizionale è emblematico di una conquista mai esaurita. La visita all’Antelope Canyon, che si trova appunto in terra Navajo, diventa per Emiliano l’occasione per riflettere sulle contaminazioni tra passato e presente e interrogarsi sul futuro di chi cerca di tenere in vita una cultura.

 

A Navajo wearing Nike shorts under the traditional costume is emblematic of an ongoing domination. Antelope Canyon, located in Navajo Land, becomes for Emiliano a chance to think over the contaminations between past and present and to meditate on the future of those people who try to keep their culture alive.

Fortunatamente, l’artista britannico David Hockney è stato smentito. La piscina Tropicana dell’Hotel Roosevelt è stata risparmiata dalle autorità locali e mantiene ancora intatto il fondo dipinto da Hockney nel 1988. Un pattern di gigantesche parentesi blu, a imitare il movimento delle onde, che Emiliano rende lucido protagonista di questo scorcio di Los Angeles.

 

Luckily facts proved the British artist David Hockney wrong. The Tropicana pool of Hotel Roosevelt was spared by local authorities and still preserves its bottom painted by Hockney in 1988. A pattern of gigantic blue brackets, imitating the movement of the waves, which Emiliano turns into the glossy protagonist of this glimpse of Los Angeles.

L’illustrazione che chiude American West ritrae la Sunset Boulevard di Los Angeles al momento del tramonto, che Emiliano ha la fortuna di cogliere giusto in tempo prima di rientrare in Italia. Come se le tremila miglia percorse abbiano voluto condurlo a quel preciso istante, per catturare nel crepuscolo urbano l’ultima meraviglia del suo viaggio illustrato.

 

The last illustration in American West portrays the Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles at its best time, sunset, which Emiliano, by a stroke of luck, can seize just in time before coming back to Italy. It is as though the three thousand miles he had covered wanted to lead him to that precise moment, to capture the last wonder of his illustrated journey in the urban twilight.

La sensazione che resta, a viaggio concluso, è la coscienza dell’infinita piccolezza dell’uomo di fronte alla grandiosità di ciò che lo circonda. E lo stupore per la varietà di colori e di forme che rendono ogni luogo irripetibile e irriproducibile, se non in una cartolina da spedire o da portare con sé come un pezzo da collezione.

 

The sensation that remains at the end of the journey is the awareness of how a man is infinitely small facing the grandeur that surrounds him, as well as the amazement before the variety of colours and shapes that make every place unique and non-reproducible, but on a postcard to send or to keep with you as a collector’s piece.
